Last Words: All things Come to an End

[Josiah Cross]

Jim Black is seated in a large black sofa chair. Beside him sits Cross seated in a wheelchair. Casts and medical wraps cover majority of Cross’s body.

 

Black: Thank you very much Cross for coming for this interview. It’s been over two weeks since your fall and many have been waiting to hear exactly what happened. There are many questions to ask but first how are you feeling?

 

Cross: I don’t know Jim how do you think I feel?

 

Black: Good?

 

Cross: Good?!

 

Black: Uhhh better?

 

Cross: Well seeing that I’m no longer unconscious, laying in a pool of my own blood, in some dark San Francisco alleyway. Yeah, I guess you could say I’m doing better Jim. But good? I feel like a damn vegetable. My first time away from the hospital and I’ve got to come here and give you an interview! I feel like s*** Jim to answer your question.

 

Black: Well Cross the fans, wrestlers, staff, we want to know what happened. I’m going to ask what could be a potentially touchy question. But it's my job to ask these. We all watched you flip out at Summercide after your loss to Versus. Some believe you may have attempted suicide Cross. Did you?

 

Cross: I might be a little crazy Jim. I might have a short fuse sometimes. My temper may occasionally get the best of me. I might be a lot of things Jim but suicidal is not one!

 

Black: Well that’s good, great. You got a lot of medical casts and stuff on you.

 

Cross: Yeah, is pointing this s*** out necessary?

 

Black: Well, the doctors say the injuries you sustained are career ending. What do you think of this?

 

Cross: They say I’ll never walk the same because of how bad my leg was broken. They say anymore blows to the head and it could kill me. You know what right now it’s a bunch of BS and I could care less about what the doctors think.

 

Black: Cross I would say it’s in your own best interest to listen to them.

 

Cross: Shut your trap Black.

 

Black: I would, but still have some more questions to ask you Cross. I’ve been informed that investigators have found no real evidence to lead them to believe that someone else was involved. We’ve also been told that you’ve told them to call it quits. What’s the deal?

 

Cross: I will take care of this situation on my own. I need no investigator, police crap getting involved. I hate the cops.

 

Black: Back to what happend. So if you didn’t jump from that hotel balcony how did you fall? You know what, how about you just tell us what exactly happened after you left the arena two weeks ago.

 

Cross: So I got a little upset following my loss and I took Mace’s advice and I just went home. If you didn’t know Jim I live in San Francisco which is less than an hour away from the arena Summercide was at. I get home to find a message on my answering machine. I press play and it’s nothing but static. I go to erase when a voice finally comes on. Still it’s static but the voice said to meet him at a nearby hotel, just a couple blocks away. He gave the room number and then the messaged ended. What was I supposed to do? Erase it and do nothing about it? I guess I needed a walk to blow off some steam so I went out and made my way to the hotel.

 

Black: Wait so did you recognize the voice?

 

Cross: No, I didn't. Like I said there was a lot of static.

 

Black: Carry on.

 

Cross: So I get to the hotel and make my way to the room which was on the third floor. I get there and the lock had been pushed in between the door and the wall, so it was open. I go inside and there’s no sign of anyone. I walked around a moment and saw nothing out of the ordinary. The balcony sliding door was cracked open some. I opened it and stepped outside. Last thing I can remember is being clubbed from behind. I don’t even remember the fall. I later wake up in the hospital. And that was that.

 

Black: So you didn’t see who it was?

 

Cross: No I didn’t but is it not god damn obvious Jim?

 

Black: Well...

 

Cross: Somebody wanted nothing to do with me! Someone wanted me out of the picture! You see he knew with me gone his job would be a breeze! I swear to god Jim when I get out of these casts and this wheelchair I will finish the job he was unable to do!

 

Black: Who?

 

Cross: Don't act stupid. You know, he knows, we all know! He can hide behind that tie but when this arm of mine heals I will take my hand, grip that tie, yank it tight, and strangle him for every last breath.

 

Black: Well then, I am sure you heard Eddie Mace was given a title shot from Mr. Montpellier and had the Championship within his grasp.

 

Cross: Yeah I did. I watched the match from the hospital bed. Hell of a fight. Mace deserved that shot. Fell just short of accomplishing an OCW first.

 

Black: OCW first?

 

Cross: First Ex-Con as OCW World Heavyweight Champion. It would have been one of those great feel good stories you know.

 

Black: Right. Why do you think Mr. Montpellier had a change or heart and gave Mace this shot? You two just had a brutal battle and I know there’s still probably bad blood?

 

Cross: To hide the damn truth Jim. Did you not listen to anything I’ve said in this interview? Is your brain the size of a pee?

 

Black: No, no it’s not.

 

Cross: You know what Jim I’m done. I don’t want my brain to explode out of my skull. You know it was cracked open.

 

Black: Yeah that would not be good. Well then Cross we had a great interview. A lot of questions were answered. I hope you have a speedy recovery and I hope one day we see you back in OCW. Do you have any last words before you are wheeled out of here?

 

Cross: Last words? Does the leader of Death Row have any last words? You don’t have someone ready to execute me now do you? You are killing me Jim.

 

Black: No, no, no Cross. Just thought I would give you a chance to finish off this interview.

 

Cross closes his eyes for a moment and takes a deep breath. He opens them slowly and looks up towards the ceiling. He lowers his head and looks back at Jim who remains seated staring at Cross.

 

Cross: You know it’s life and death in this world. Since the day of my birth, my death began its walk. It’s walking towards me, without hurrying. My time will come one of these days but now is not my time! People say the end may have come for Cross, my career may be over, but my revenge I will get. You haven’t seen the last of Josiah Cross I can tell you that. It may be a year, two, three, ten, but I will walk again and I will hunt you down! Wherever you might be I will find you and I will deliver the punishment! Capital F***ing Punishment! This interview is over, get me the hell out of here!

 

Black, like an idiot, stands up and goes to shake Cross’s hand but ends up faking a hand shake next to Cross’s cast. Black smiles and laughs at the camera. Cross glares at him with disgust. Nurses come and begin to wheel Cross away. The camera fades out.
