This event was the American pay per view debut of Hideto Matsuda under the name Unbeatable MATSUDA. The interview is for RISE Puroresu Magazine based out of Osaka Prefecture, conducted by reporter Hitsuo Takeshi in San Diego, California and has been translated for English speaking audiences. Hitsuo Takeshi meets his old friend Hideto Matsuda, who’s career he has been following for years, in a coffee shop in San Diego to conduct his first interview with the Japanese celebrity since his move to the United States in search of Western fame. He shakes Matsuda’s and before the two of them take a seat at a round table. The interview is taken out of character. TAKESHI: I’m here once again with Matsuda Hide, formally of NJWA fame, who is now making a name for himself in the OCW promotion in the United States. Tell me, Matsuda-san, how have you been adjusting to your new home? MATSUDA: Well if you couldn’t tell already things are a lot different around here. Some of it is good some of it is bad, but its all a pretty big adjustment. It’s definitely not home just yet. [laughs] TAKESHI: When you say its not home, you mean you still crave for Japanese entertainment. How do you stay connected on the other side of the world? MATSUDA: Thankfully Japan is the “cool” thing in America right now, which is actually helping me a lot in from a career standpoint. From an entertainment standpoint, a lot of Japanese artists have been having North American tours, I’ve been to an X-Japan concert in the months I have been here, which was nice. Maybe if I make it to OCW’s Wreslution event they can perform a rendition of my theme song live--that would be awesome. TAKESHI: [laughs] So you still prefer the vocal talents of Toshimitsu Deyama to the Soldier Boy? MATSUDA: [laughing] For now, yes. TAKESHI: Back to wrestling, tell more about this Unbeatable MATSUDA gimmick. How has it developed and how has it been received, Matsuda-san? MATSUDA: Unbeatable MATSUDA is an off shoot of my Spider MATSUDA gimmick, although it is a bit more “Japanese-y”. I come out to samisen and noh wailers like Tarantula Mishima [laughs]. My English is still less than stellar, so they brought Moryo Madara to be my translator and manager. We have been pretty well received although we are very serious characters. TAKESHI: I have seen that Unbeatable MATSUDA is very serious, violent, and even scary. Is there any chance that we may see Matsuda Hide’s fun side in America? MATSUDA: I wouldn’t count my fun side out just yet, Takeshi-san. Maybe when I settle in America will find that I still have a little “tora” in me [laughs]. TAKESHI: Very good! So tell me more about the wrestlers that you have been dealing with in OCW. MATSUDA: They are certainly talented... to say the least. They don’t get along like us Japanese wrestlers do--they are always arguing backstage about something or other. I’m sure they hate each other. TAKESHI: Matsuda-san, your first major story arc has been against a Samoan wrestler called Patolomai. Tell me about this rivalry. MATSUDA: He is very, very big. I’ve never gone against someone so heavy in my life. He makes Giant Fuji look like a child in comparison. He is very strong and very talented, I respect him a lot as a competitor. We plan on revolutionizing the company’s rookie brand, and our angle will take a very unexpected turn soon enough. TAKESHI: Any clues to be given? MATSUDA: Absolutely not! [laughs] TAKESHI: So could this feud be the American version of the Spider Matsuda v. Pink Spider rivalry? MATSUDA: [Matsuda’s smile fades quickly] I doubt it could get that gory. TAKESHI: Speaking of which, word in wrestling forums say that Pink Spider is also looking to make the jump to the west to expand his popularity. How do you feel about this? MATSUDA: Pink Spider and I have had our issues in the past, and thats where I plan on leaving them--in the past. I wish him the best in his journey to the West, but I really don’t want to work with him again. TAKESHI: Where does this bad blood stem from? All puro fans are familiar with your in ring rivalry, but the out of the ring disputes have been shrouded in mystery. MATSUDA: He’s still bitter about my big push. I’ll leave it at that. TAKESHI: Word in Japan is that there is now an Ambition title. you would make history not only as the first Japanese champion but also the first holder of the title itself. Will you be competing at the Wreslution pay per view for the title? MATSUDA: Time will tell Takeshi-san, time will tell. TAKESHI: Well that’s all the time we have today, Matsuda-san, it is an honor as always, keep representing your country with pride! We will all continue to root you on in the land of the rising sun. MATSUDA: Arigatou, Takeshi-san. Hopefully soon enough, OCW will hold an event in the Budokan, so that I may compete before my people once again. Sayonara!

[The screen fades back from the commercial break and returns to its scheduled programming in Tuesday Night Riot. The camera cuts to a black limousine pulling into the back parking dropping off two men. The camera pans and zooms in to the bottom of the limousine, showing the expensive leather shoes of an older man as he stepped out of the vehicle. As the camera’s lens goes up the mans finely tailored suit and to his chest, the shirt of which was left mostly unbuttoned to proudly display his massive, intricate, traditional tattoos, it was by now obvious that Mr. Yamaguchi and Unbeatable MATSUDA were paying Riot a visit.] SCAGGS: Well what do we have here? Another visitor from Ambition? POLING: Great! These rookies have been up to no good every time they show up on this show... [After Mr. Yamaguchi stepped out, an elaborately dressed MATSUDA stepped out, holding the top of his head to keep the headdress that veiled his face steady. The men headed past the boiler room and into the backstage area.] ----- [Later on in the night, after another commercial, the camera cuts to MATSUDA and Mr. Yamaguchi backstage, looking for an interviewer. Stacy Clark happened to be walking by, having just finished up an interview with someone else, only to be snatched by the wrist by the deceptively strong Mr. Yamaguchi.] SCAGGS: Looks like our Asian Invasion is continuing. POLING: Isn’t that the name of the porno you just watched before the show? Don’t try to take creative credit for that phrase. SCAGGS: Well I guess I’ll have to come clean there... YAMAGUCHI: You! Woman! Unbeatable MATSUDA has something to say and he demands to be interviewed. CLARK: Um... err... okay? [stacy obviously still confused, holds the OCW issued microphone to the veiled face of MATSUDA. Mr. Yamaguchi slaps her hand and places the microphone to his own mouth.] YAMAGUCHI: If the Spider wishes to speak with you, he surely will. I will speak for him. [Mr. Yamaguchi directs the shaky cameraman to focus in on he and MATSUDA, who stood with his arms crossed and face covered.] YAMAGUCHI: As the views of OCW should know by now, Unbeatable MATSUDA’s glorious introduction to the people of the United States was ruined last Sunday because of the actions of a fat, disgusting, savage. This dishonor will not be tolerated! [MATSUDA shakes his head to signify ‘no’] YAMAGUCHI: While Unbeatable MATSUDA is fearless and powerful, he is also ruthlessly intelligent, and while he knows that he could destroy the savage by himself, he has chosen to use this occasion to strike alliances with those with experience in this country. [MATSUDA nods.] YAMAGUCHI: Which brings us to the Riot promotion for the first of many times. Unbeatable MATSUDA has studied your roster and has taken particular interest in the group known as ‘The Darkside’. The Spider sees that they understand that there is strength in numbers and as such, your group would be a powerful ally. CLARK: So... what are you trying to say? YAMAGUCHI: What he is trying to say is that Unbeatable MATSUDA expresses interest in joining this Darkside. Looking at the members of this team, he sees no reason why he would not be welcome among them--even noticing that one of them is the famous Korean wrestler, Yung Jook. To appease the leader of this group, Mr. Smythe Dawonder, MATSUDA has made a rare gesture, making an honorary face paint in the image of this fearless leader. [MATSUDA removes his headdress, revealing this extremely racist, blackface paint design, with a serious grin on his face. Origin I: [When Ambition cuts to a commercial break, the viewer’s screen fades black for a few moments. An eerie creak can echoes through the viewers living room as their television continues to provide no lighting. There is another creaking sound, this one louder as a white blur appears. The blur comes into focus revealing the kanji “鯉” meaning “koi” the Japanese equivalent of a carp. When the kana came to fruition, the booming voice of Mr. Masaki Yamaguchi is heard, speaking in his native Japanese. White subtitles are legible at the bottom of the viewer’s screen.] YAMAGUCHI: (In Japanese) Many wonder why Unbeatable MATSUDA commands such respect, even at his currently entry level position. By the end of the night you will understand. [The screen brightens up showing a six sided ring, de-voided of wrestlers who had stained its white mat with their blood, sweat, and tears. Still, surrounding the ring is a packed stadium filled with devoted Japanese fans, chanting the names of their heroes. This is NJWA. At first the chants were relatively inaudible, but eventually one name came from the mouths of all in the arena.] CROWED: TA-RAN CROWED: TU-LA CROWED: TA-RAN CROWED: TU-LA YAMAGUCHI: (In Japanese) Our story begins with one man, though this man is not Unbeatable MATSUDA, his path shaped the boy that would become the man. His name: Tarantula Mishima. CROWED: TA-RAN CROWED: TU-LA CROWED: TA-RAN CROWED: TU-LA [Thick, dark smoke built up at the entrance ramp at the far end of the stadium, the slow paced sound of a traditional kabuki drum begins to erupt from the loud speakers. Lights begin to flash as the legendary Japanese wrestler’s tron lit the arena. The silhouette of an elaborately dressed figure is visible through the thick smoke. The crowed popped, continuing to chant the name of their champion as he stepped into visibility.] YAMAGUCHI: (In Japanese) The man you see here making his triumphant entrance is the Great Tarantula Mishima--the most innovative man in all of puroresu in the twilight of his career. [Mishima made his way down the long ramp and steps into the ring, violently ripping off his headdress and spitting green mist into the air. His face, now partially covered in the bright green liquid and detailed face paint, is visibly old, the legendary wrestler is in his sixties. The music comes to an abrupt end as he takes a knee.] YAMAGUCHI: (in Japanese) Tarantula Mishima is known for heavily influencing the Japanese strong style--the maneuvers that he has innovated are countless. This is the final scene of a highly competitive tournament to study under the master and take on his mantle--the opportunity of a lifetime. [The lights turn on as two young men walk down the ramp, there is no music, even the audience remains eerily silent. The two youngsters enter the ring, both bruised and battered from the tournament which all took place on this one night--between the two of them six matches had been wrestled.] YAMAGUCHI: (in Japanese) On the right, Keiji Matsumoto, known now as Pink Spider. On the right, Hideto Matsuda. [Mishima, who was down on one knee stood to his feet, staring down both candidates with cold eyes. He grabbed the young Matsuda by the hair, forcing him to look up violently before releasing him. The old man then approached Matsumoto, putting a microphone to his lips.] MISHIMA: MATSUDA! KIMI NI KIMETA! [Mishima looks to Matsuda before spitting red mist into the face of Matsumoto. Temporarily blinded, Tarantula motioned for Matsuda to finish the job.] [Matsuda nodded, shocked by what had just occurred and quickly performed his finishing maneuver, a variation of the Ranhei called the Tsuki-yomi.] [Mishima proceeded to slip out of the ring, crawling beneath the ring, and the young Matsuda ran under after his new teacher.] YAMAGUCHI: (in English) The koi is the most resilient of fish--he is able to swim against the current and climb the fall. According to Japanese legend, when the Koi reaches the top of the waterfall, it becomes a dragon. This koi’s journey was only just beginning... [The viewer’s screen fades to black.]

[The familiar sound of a triumphant shamisen rings out its violent chords as the promotional video for Unbeatable MATSUDA is shown on the viewer’s television screen one again. However there is something different this time, what was once kana indistinguishable to the American audience has been translated so that the viewer may understand.] [TEXT:] I AM MATSUDA. I AM UNBEATABLE. I AM COMING TO OCW I AM UNBEATABLE MATSUDA. AND AMBITION IS MINE. [As the flashing images of the famous Japanese strong style wrestler fade to black and the roar of the shamisen returns to silence, the viewer is not greeted by the sound of their local commercial, instead, the screen briefly remains blank.] [The sound of a traditional Noh Theatre percussion sends sharp, high pitch clicks which echo in the viewer’s home. The click starts out slow, but it begins to pick up, the sound of Noh chanters can be heard wailing in the darkness. As the sound of the music reaches its peak speed, it stops abruptly, and MATSUDA steps into view, shortly followed by an intimidating older Japanese man in a suit.] [MATSUDA is dressed head to toe in one of his elaborate entrance attires, resembling the traditional garb of a Kabuki samurai in black and gold--most noticeable is the elaborate head piece sitting upon his head. An elegant yet fierce mask covered all but small portions of his painted face.] [The other man is older, his cold gaze hidden behind darkened sunglasses. His suit is fine tailored, the top few buttons are left undone displaying one of many detailed tattooed which covered his body, His balding hair is pulled back into a ponytail, he is the first to speak.] MAN: The clock is ticking towards the first Ambition of the new year, but Unbeatable MATSUDA grows restless. [His voice is deep and booming, his words are spoken with a thick yet understandable Japanese accent.] MAN: But first allow us to introduce ourselves. I am Masaki Yamaguchi, and I will serve as manager and translator to Unbeatable MATSUDA. [He motions an open hand directing the camera to MATSUDA, the camera pans and zooms in, going up his extravagant attire before stopping on his covered face.] YAMAGUCHI: And the man you see here is the crown jewel of Japan, Unbeatable MATSUDA. [Making a jagged claw out of his fingers covered in black tape, MATSUDA makes a crisp cut throat motion at the sound of his name.] YAMAGUCHI: But I digress. By now, you should know what this is about. PATOLOMAI! [At the mention of the name, MATSUDA points towards the camera violently.] YAMAGUCHI: Do not think for one moment that Unbeatable MATSUDA has not been watching you! He is aware of your threats and stands ready to face you EYE to EYE! [MATSUDA points to the darkened eye holes on his mask.] YAMAGUCHI: Your day of Kings is upon us! All you can do now is pray to Buddha that you are not the great one’s first victim! [With this said, in one swift motion MATSUDA shoves Mr. Yamaguchi out off screen and removes the headdress, he face is intricately pained in black, red, and white.] MATSUDA: OTETSUDAI SEPPUKU SHIMASHOUKA? WATASHI WA MATSUDA! WATASHI WA UNABETABARU. WATASHI WA UNBETABARU MATSUDA! [Matsuda proceeds to throw his head back and spit a green mist onto the camera lens causing it to almost instantly to cut to black.] ----- [MATSUDA TRANSLATION: Shall I assist you in your suicide? I am Matsuda. I am unbeatable. I am Unbeatable MATSUDA!]

I might be a little biased, but I like this one better than Riot's...
