Quartz Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 TTT PRESENTS QUICK REVIEW - YAKE HITS EM WITH THE RAZZLE DAZZLE Quick bullets and notes from an AMAZING RIOT, because my time is precious and also fuck you. The pinnacle of show quality to be honest. - "Why are you turning... AH MY SHIRT." That's right folks, we just saw arguably our BEST male babyface in the company piss on a personal bodyguard. Cort did a fantastic job being fun and unique here and that's not easy to do when you RP as much as he does. I would appreciate a tad more vivid imagery in RPs like these, and his strength is still all in the charisma, but this was very fun either way and sets up a later angle. - Uncrowned almost have their own style segment at this point. CHECKIN IN WITH DOC AND ANT. Always set up the same. Always executed well and never turning the focus primarily from one person or another. Other tag teams could learn from this balance. Match: Mistico and Telos Not a whole lot to say, because of it's placement on the card, it was a great warmup to the show. I thought Telos had him dead to rights! Good to see stick skill improvement from Telos each match. Progression! Mistico came in as the favorite and was able to escape. - AC with one of the absolute funniest RPs I have ever read in OCW. God dammit that punchline was on point. For anyone too dense to understand the joke... AC playing meta with himself and has to remind OCW staff who he is by putting himself in a situation he's usually in - being pinned. That jogging the guards memory and my picture of AC just walking in with a despondent face. Just so simple yet so so good. - Pugh shoots HARD on Stevie Clark! - This Twitter beef has escalated. Buddy Burns waits in the shadows to STRIKE WHILE THE IRON IS HOT. Just watch out for his FPR, Buddy! - The Trashy Oaks Live-In Medical Center was one of my favorite bits so far this season. I sometimes don't love RPs I do although I realize they need to be there, but this one left me super happy and I hope the imagery and situational comedy resonates with the rest of you idiots. Match: Doc Green vs Coolidge Coolidge breaks FPR Green fights through it Coolidge continues to break FPR Green wins anyway Next - Cort is a joy to work with and some of the ways he manifests these one-liners is Rocky-esque. I still hate his walls of text and I have to break them apart when we work together... but hey, he's the one that makes the better content so team work make the dreamwork. - I was half expecting "shep" to not be shep at all the way he was hushed throughout. Not Bobby's best promo but impactful on a loaded Pride scene either way. - I will MARK for Kasstianity promos! - The very high quality long RPs are broken up by high quality small RPs in this show. In Blain vs Dragana's case.. It's a very high quality long RP. Unique idea, elements of serious and funny, two great writers, meta references. Dewp - TTT4Lyfe - Match: Tayy vs Shep & Follow Up The match? One thing - FUCKMEGODDAMMITIMISSEDTHEREVERSALONTHEKNEESTRIKEFUUUUUUUUUUCKIHADEMSONOFABITCH Great match Shep. Fun, short, competitive. Champ wins, newcomer shows he can compete. Everyone wins. Follow up was so much fun to write that I read it back several times to ensure I could picture everything happening. The way we wanted to do this would have been too difficult to pull off given the tools WWE 2K has and the time we had to do it. Hope you all enjoyed it. - Fucking P3 stealing my thunder with a PSA/commercial style of their own. LEAVE TRASH ALONE YOU FUCKING WEIRDOS. Laughed throughout the show, probably the 2nd funniest promo on the show. Match: ElsAce vs Valkyrishlie I saw 20m and was worried but 4 very entertaining women and a female tag match in a FUN FUN FUN new - look women's division had me locked in throughout. Competitive til the end and the finish was AWESOME. The corner move into a coup de grace was a super fun fin. Ashley going back to bitchy heel after building some face heat and sympathy at the start of the feud. Confusing but glad Ashley didn't lose her true nature. I like her character and it'd be tough to pull off a face without a long-term change. - TLBS LAYING DOWN THE LAW. Let's see if the kid can overcome the BITW at Clash! (assuming Drago accepts the challenge) MATCH: AC Cobra vs Pugh Despite Cobra still lacking a lot of game skill and nuance with the new stuff this year, he competed with Pugh, who gave him a bunch of openings, some he actually capilaized on. I really thought he'd win this one and it would have been great, but alas. Nobody fucks with the Pedigree. - Tre with a perfect example of representation when not booked. Get your name out there, kiddos! This kinda thing, while not blowing you away from a writing standpoint, will be fresh in your mind when you see him wrestle next, whether consciously or not. - Stacy was all over this show! Yet again, she's shoved aside by this weird admiration/rivalry/unlikely duo. Pugh's hair gets cut after his show randomly before Bobby takes out years of anger on his face. MATCH: TTT vs P3 BEAT DRAGO'S DICK CLUBBBBBBB! TTT DON'T TAKE PINS FROM P3! - Risky move from Valkyrie going an ankle deeper into the drama category. Understanding people are going to be weird about it and not view it for what it is. If you think relationships/love etc haven't been a part of wrestling, then you need a history lesson. Watch the shows as entertainment shows and creative outlets and enjoy the damn thing. Finally getting some more backstory about this mystery person! Fits in perfect with the angle currently running and this is a perfect instance of having a deeper human aspect of a character outside of hopping from feud to feud. Attempts to develop a character so that there's identification of the person THAT'S INSIDE the feud is always going to be praised by me, it's something I've striven to do since I joined!! This show was fucking awesome. So much quality writing and outside of a longish AC/Pugh match and a FPR hulabaloo Coolidge match that detracted from the quality a bit for me, the matches fit right in. KANG DOC Posted January 24, 2019 Posted January 24, 2019 (The other) Adam’s seriously wacky time conscious quickfire Riot Review Taking inspiration from Rudo isn’t so hard when he comes up with such slick methods for reviewing shows. Huge shout out to him for coming up with this method, I’m going to give it a go today in an attempt to get through these quicker as to not get burned out writing these up, and also to help prevent myself from repeating things I’ve said in previous reviews. So, with that in mind, here’s my ten big takeaways from Riot 520: 10. The big running story of tonight’s show was Cort dishing out comeuppance for Shep following on from the last couple of weeks where Shep always seemed to be one step ahead. The tone was set nicely at the beginning, with Cort hilariously evading the guards with his piss, but switched really well into a more serious tone when it counted, culminating with a really nice staredown in the ring leading to Cort being chased off into the stands. This did a lot to advance both the pride title storyline and also the Tayy vs Telos feud, and was really well written and the exact injection of tension both feuds needed to get that excitement level up ahead of the Clash. 9. MATCH Elsa Holmberg & Ace vs Valk & Ashley Moore - This was a really intriguing match going into it with two odd pairings, but I think that worked in this match’s favour, especially with the Ashley/Valk storyline that’s going on at the moment. I still think Ashley’s attire could do with a bit of work to make her look more unique, but keep the heeled boots, since that’s really the only thing that sets her apart at the moment. Valk and Moore working well together in the early goings with a couple of tag team move attempts got this match off to a nice start with them on top. Elsa took a lot of damage in the first half of this match and it showed, with Ace unable to get her partner in without the danger of her getting hit with a finisher. Ace did really well to keep up the fight here, and bring Elsa back into the fight in a much better position in the closing minutes, allowing them to pick up a big win with a huge diving foot stomp. A surprisingly fun match overall, and furthers the idea of Moore and Valk just not being able to co-exist together, especially with the post match RP, good work. 8. Good guy Rusty taking a young French luchador by the name of Aisu under his wing, and he wants a piece of the Uncrowned. Unexpected, but a nice little laying down of the gauntlet here; suppose we’ll be taking him up on that offer. Rust’s having none of it, and I like the idea of Aisu being completely oblivious to Rust’s TTT antics, so he just thinks he’s a completely good guy, although you’d kind of have to be careful with that depending on where you want to take the character of Aisu, whether you want him to be comedic or serious. 7. Blacksmith has improved a hell of a lot since first arriving in OCW, not only with his English and writing skill, but just as a character. With this promo here, he really got across his voice well and he’s really took the bull by the horns here with his LHW title match coming up. What started off as a scrapped match has really developed into something good for TLBS, and this was a perfect continuation of it. 6. One hell of an Ambition hype package, if this is the production standard we should be expecting for the series then I can’t bloody wait to see the finished article. 5. Bobby absolutely destroys Shep on the mic, returning to his best form by not allowing him to get a look in and tearing him apart with some great insults. This is what I want to see Bobby doing, being a lovable dickhead, getting the fans onside by oozing charisma. I felt that this was much more effective, in conjunction with the war of words between him, Cort and Shep a couple of weeks ago, in building the tension between him and Shep, depending on what match we’re getting involving Bobby at the Clash. 4. Blaine and Dragana get into it again with a continuation of the best of 5 series for the title. These are really nicely put together segments, with the comedic aspects of both characters coming across really well and balancing well with the serious threats of both of their in-ring skill. I hope/expect for this to finish up with a one-on-one match for the title at the Clash, or beyond maybe? Either way, this is something I want to see and is once again a really nice angle for an OCW Title match going into the Clash. 3. Classic TTT segment is always going to be entertaining, and we got a couple here, but I'm going to mainly talk about the Clark Effect. Rust got a chance to shine in this one, delivering his trademark ‘Bonjour Idiots’ and really getting across the good guy rusty through Quartz and himself. From the sounds of this, we’re getting Bobby and KD vs CQC for the tag titles, which is going to be a damn good match and if CQC can retain, another pair of veteran guys to add to their kill list. I’m looking forward to watching it unfold. 2. Bobby and Pugh finally get into it with a chaotic brawl in the backstage area. Pugh got his damn ass whooped here, but the only criticism I would have of this is that Pugh was wearing a different attire to what he wore against Cobra and it wasn’t explained why or what have you, but that didn’t take away from this angle’s purpose. 1. MAIN EVENT - P3 vs TTT - I had very high expectations going into this one, and thankfully they delivered very well. As with most main events, I simply sat back and let this one unfold before me. The finish to this one kept everyone looking like a million bucks, with Kass kicking out of the one winged hoot and getting the low blow on Drago to enter the BDDC. Loved Jake’s calling of the Tower of Doom spot, mainly because it was such a natural reaction and so hilarious. Other than that, this one flew by and capped off an excellent show once again. This was another excellent Riot, and didn’t drag whatsoever. The Clash couldn’t come soon enough, and I’m excited for what Yake and I have up our collective sleeve for the Final Word with it. You’re not going to want to miss it, lil bubba. Thanks for reading and nice one everyone. MOTN: P3 vs TTT RPOTN: Tie between Bobby going off on Shep and the post-match angle involving Tayy, Cort, Shep and Telos. 11
Keith Hendrix Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 OCW Riot 520 Review Jan-22-2019 Opening Cort segment -Humorous, I thought it was a great little, cheeky character segment. Way to kick off the show. The Clash promo -Really nice graphic work. I enjoyed this a lot, visually. Kinda creepy, but I'm into it. Everett segment -I really enjoyed this. It was a nice to get the inspirational stuff wrapped up with a little humor. Mistico vs. Telos -I really liked this match. The contrast in styles made it a great first match in the ring. The match was quality. Ashley Moore segment -Short and sweet. Really good dialogue for Ashley and helps reinforce the sometimes irrational universal affection for Valkyrie. Reminds me very much of the Bayley effect. Cobra segment -Felt pretty meta. I enjoy the little playful segments that get us to the different parts of the arena, etc. This type of promo helps a show fill out nicely. Pugh segment -I really, really liked this. This is a great example of doing some character work, having a bit of fun, but then tying it all up into a story...about WRESTLING and what matters most (i.e. the title). Throw the personal issues in there... money. It really isn't that complicated of a formula, it just nice to see it all in one place. Telos segment -Great continuity rp. I love the dynamic between wrestler and manager. Solid piece. MAXWALE v Buddy Burns Twitter beef. -This is the type of segment that makes OCW a really unique and special place. I love what was done here. OCW Ambition Green vs Everett package -I'm very glad they did this. It looks great. I'm excited about that match now. TTT promo -This was just phenomenal. Funny shit. Coolidge vs Doc Green -I enjoyed watching this match. Tayy segment -This was a really well written promo. Bobby Minio segment -Bobby Minio is a trip. This was fun. Kassidy segment -Great sequencing following the Minio segment. It really showed Kassidy's character, but got straight to the matter at hand as far as the title picture is concerned. Dragana and Blaine segment -I enjoy the series of contests between these two. Looking forward to more. CQC segment -This felt like it dragged a bit, especially after four previous segments between the last match and this promo. It also felt a bit like alphabet soup. Without really understanding all of the history, this promo was hard to get into. It would be good it we wrote things for the audience that knows, but introduced things gently for the audience that doesn't. If you notice in a well-written tv promo on a wrestling show, the promo always includes just enough recap so that if you don't know the entire backstory (aka haven't watched in awhile or are new to the show) you won't be lost. This is always a tough balance to strike. Sometimes it's just a matter of making sure every time you introduce a new (new, being first time used in that promo) acronym you spell it out or say who's in it the first time, even if you assume everyone in the audience already knows. So every promo should say “Platinum Platonic Partners” (even if it's just in the description, but not the dialogue) at some point before “P3” is used. Otherwise, you risk losing newer viewers. Listen to the commentary for the main event during the entrances for an example. Overall, the segment was good. I liked all of the character work. Dialogue was fine. But after the previous segments, it felt like too much. Tayy Briezee vs Shepherd -This was a fun match. I really thought it was fun to watch and call. Mugen promo -I wasn't crazy about this. It felt like it was going somewhere, but I never quite got there. I think it needed a bit more direct language targeted at the opponent. Post-Briezee vs Shepherd fallout -This was cool. It felt like really good wrestling television. I really enjoyed the connected chaos. Elsa & Ace vs. Valkyrie & Moore -I enjoyed this tag match. The segment earlier got me excited about it. The match delivered. I was actually surprised by the finish. Good shit. Aisu promo -Good promo, but just felt like too much of certain cast members on this show. Cobra vs Pugh -This was a good match. I really liked the strategy involved. Pugh looked like he really used some environmental awareness and experience to pull this out. The Last Blacksmith promo -I'm into the match. I'm into the challenge and the callout. It felt like there were a few typos. But I'm happy about where this is going. Ashley Moore promo -This was a really good segment. I love the thread from the match earlier and I can see the tension between these two coming to a head. Golden's scene -Nice little training promo, a little typical but I'd like to see where he goes with it. 2nd Buddy B vs MAXWALE twitter: -I liked this, not as much as the first one though. I don't see why we'd go back to another segment from these two on the same show. I get that it's trying to be a continuation from the previous segment, but with all of the other repetition on the show it just felt forced. H20 promo: -I really like this promo. There was a bit of insider baseball, OCW stuff that I'm not sure translates as easily as we'd like it too. It wasn't too much, though, and it wasn't difficult to follow the promo. It was well written with good dialogue. Main event: P3 vs TTT -This was a great main event match. It felt really big. It was set up by segments earlier in the night. The commentary was spot on. It actually did a much better job with the alphabet soup than the earlier promos. Last segment- Valk -I really enjoyed this promo thoroughly...so many question. Overall: -This show was pretty good. I enjoyed most of the segments and matches. But to be honest, these shows feel too long. Sometimes it feels like we are forcing too many segments into one card. I know it's good to have both people in a match rp and maybe have one before the match and one after. But honestly, it felt like a lot of these segments could have been cut and saved for another card. I think if the shows were a bit lighter, they'd be easier to follow and we'd get more engagement. Also, talent would probably step up the quality even more, if we were asked to do a bit less. I know, I'm new around here. But it feels like we are in that WWE zone where we are putting out so much content it's really hard to stay on top of all of it, while still putting out a lot and trying to have fun. I say this with a mind to how long it takes me to do live read/watch alongs on my channel. They have made me aware of just how long it takes to get through a show. 9
